Day two Rome

Rome is boot camp – for the body and mind. My thighs complain from so many stairs and I can't sleep from mind overload.

We visit the food market around the corner and with our basic Italian buy fruit and vegetables, cheese, olive oil, balsamic vinegar and vino – back home and up the five flights of stairs before heading out for the day.

We spend hours at the Villa Borghese (mainly because we get lost and go in circles around the gardens), then the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna. From here we walk into the thick of Rome – so many tourists – and stumble upon the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and Pantheon. Phew.

In one area there are lots of men wearing black suits who look like security men, others with guns. Not sure where we are but decide to move on to another area.

I nearly lose Alan in the metro on the way home when the door of the totally crammed carriage closes with Alan half in and half out the door. Thankfully someone drags him all the way in as we take off.

We recover on our rooftop with a vino watching the last rays on our fourteen marbled friends on top of the cathedral.
